Local SEO checklist: getting found on Google in Southampton

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “cafe in Portswood”, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top, then a list of websites underneath. Getting into those spots is what local SEO is all about — and for most small businesses it’s the most valuable marketing you can do.

The good news: most of it is free, and you can do a lot of it yourself. Work through this checklist and you’ll be ahead of many local competitors.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and the local “map pack”. It’s the single most important thing for local search.

  • Claim and verify your business if you haven’t already.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category — this matters a lot — then add relevant secondary ones.
  • Fill in every section: opening hours, services, service areas, description, website link and booking link.
  • Add real photos of your premises, team and work. Keep adding new ones over time.
  • Post updates and offers occasionally — it shows the profile is active.

2. Get your name, address and phone number consistent

Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Make sure your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) are written exactly the same way everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook, directories and so on. Small differences like “Rd” vs “Road” aren’t a disaster, but a wrong phone number or old address can hurt.

3. Build up genuine reviews

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. The best approach is simple and steady:

  • Ask happy customers for a review — a short link or QR code makes it easy.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and promptly.
  • Never buy reviews or write fake ones. Beyond being against Google’s rules, fake reviews are now explicitly banned under UK consumer protection law.

4. Make your website clearly local

Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it. Your website should make both obvious:

  • Mention your town and the areas you cover naturally in page titles, headings and text — for example “Electrician in Southampton”.
  • Put your address (or service area) and phone number in the footer of every page.
  • Create a separate page for each main service, rather than listing everything on one page.
  • If you cover several areas, write genuinely useful pages for the key ones — not copy-and-paste pages with the town name swapped.
  • Embed a Google Map on your contact page.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data (schema) so search engines can read your details reliably. Every Solent Web site includes this.

5. Get listed in the right places

Listings on other trusted websites — called citations — help confirm you’re a real, local business. Start with the essentials:

  • Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect (for Apple Maps and Siri)
  • Facebook and other social profiles you actually use
  • Major UK directories such as Yell
  • Industry-specific directories and trade bodies relevant to you
  • Local organisations — business networks, chambers of commerce, sponsorships of local clubs or events
Quality over quantityA handful of accurate, relevant listings beats hundreds of low-quality directory submissions. Avoid anyone promising "500 backlinks for £50".

6. Nail the technical basics

  • Mobile-friendly. Most local searches happen on phones.
  • Fast. Speed affects both rankings and how many visitors stick around — see why a slow website costs you customers.
  • Secure. Your site should load over HTTPS (the padlock).
  • Google Search Console. Set it up (it’s free) to see which searches you appear for and spot problems.

7. Keep it going

Local SEO isn’t a one-off job. A little regular effort — new photos, fresh reviews, the occasional blog post answering customer questions — adds up over months. Results usually build gradually rather than overnight, and anyone who guarantees you the number one spot is overpromising.

Quick checklist

  1. Google Business Profile claimed, verified and fully filled in
  2. Name, address and phone consistent everywhere
  3. A simple system for asking for reviews — and replying to them
  4. Service pages that mention your location naturally
  5. Contact details on every page and schema markup in place
  6. Listed on Bing, Apple and key UK directories
  7. Fast, mobile-friendly, secure site with Search Console set up
